Swim With Elephants

Elephants Swim and Play in the River in Thailand

Any trip to Thailand wouldn’t be complete without a day spent at an Elephant camp or sanctuary. Here is the thing though, although many tourists ride elephants here in Thailand, the elephants’ backs are just not made for riding. Over time, it damages their spines. So, what is a better alternative?

Well, elephants love and I mean “really love” to swim. So, to interact with them doing something they love gives you a connection with them that is incredible. So, where is the best place to swim with elephants in Thailand? In our opinion, Elephants World (Yes, they use the plural “s”) in Kanchanaburi is the best place to swim with elephants in Thailand.

Elephants World is the Best Place to Swim with Elephants in Thailand

Years ago, the most well respected elephant veterinarian in Thailand started an elephant sanctuary on the banks of the Kwai River. It is called Elephants World and it has quickly become one of the best places to hang out with elephants for a day. And, yes, you get to swim with them in the river and if one of the elephants is playful enough you might even get to climb on his trunk for an amazing selfie. In fact, the only thing you won’t do in a day with the elephants is ride them.

The first time we swam with the elephants at Elephants World we were lucky enough to swim with a baby elephant that wanted to play. Momma elephant wasn’t too far away and when the baby got a little bit naughty, momma used her long trunk to bring the baby elephant back in close to her. It was so cute. The momma elephant had that look in her eyes as if to say “sorry my kid is just getting a little excited” just like human moms say all over the world when their kids act up. It was just priceless.

If you are staying in Kanchanaburi, Elephants World will send a van to pick you up at your hotel the morning of your adventure. The van picks you up usually between 8:00 and 9:00 am so you can be there by the first feeding time. You would be surprised how much fun it is to feed whole mellons to an elephant. What is great about this is Elephants World has built a feeding deck so you are at an eye to eye level with the elephants.

If you are staying at the Thailand Adventure Network’s recommended hotel, the Binlha Raft Hotel (https://thailandadventurenetwork.com/recommended-hotel-binlha-raft-resort-kanchanaburi) you should have no problem being picked up by the curtesy van.

While you are at Elephants World you will obviously get to feed the elephants, but they will feed you as well. They recommend bringing a banana or two to sneak and give to the elephants to make a friend, but if you don’t have one, don’t worry. They will have laundry baskets full of fruit for you to feed the elephants with. No need to stress there.

The lunch buffet was surprisingly good with a combination of Thai and western food and in season they had Mangosteen, the queen of Thai fruits. Mangosteen is a purple, native sweet fruit that is peeled to eat the juicy inner white part. It is very good and I hope you get to try them when you are in Thailand.

The most amazing part of your day at Elephants World is the time you get to swim with the elephants. For the elephants, it is also bath time so you will get to scrub them down with long brushes. Just remember that they like to have fun so don’t forget to play. Swimming with the Elephants in the Kwai River is just something you shouldn’t pass up in your lifetime. Put it on your bucket list today.
